Glasgow’s Largest College Pledge to College Sport Award!

City of Glasgow College have officially begun their journey as the fourth College to commit to the College Sport Award – our self development student sport framework.

It’s safe to say that 2017/18 academic year was one to remember for City of Glasgow College. Entering new teams into BUCS leagues, hosting the 2017 SSS Festive Gathering, actively engaging with other SSS events and forums, and to top it all off – they came out on top as the only institution in Scotland to gain 5 stars in the Healthy Body Healthy Mind Awards.

This academic year City of Glasgow College have pledged to be part of the College Sport Award (CSA). The CSA is a self-improvement framework for Colleges that wish to provide physical activity and sport opportunities to their students, staff and communities. The Award is a key project of Scottish Student Sport and is part of our work over the coming years as we aim to help build a world class system for physical activity and student sport. The award is supported by the Scottish Funding Council, and endorsed by Sportscotland, College Development Network and NUS Scotland.

Our West Regional Development Coordinator, Megan, met with City of Glasgow’s (CoG) Student Sport Working Group, made up of both staff and students to secure buy in from the development group. As a collective, they expressed keen interest and support towards the CSA and have become the fourth College in Scotland to commit to the award. As Megan sits on their working group, she is able to support CoG to create and implement an action plan that sets out how to achieve each level of the award. Furthermore, the group are exploring how to engage their students in additional SSS opportunities such as the Regional Ladders and have three of their students committed to the 18/19 Leadership Programme.

So, what’s next for City of Glasgow College?  SSS will provide a summary report from that identifies key opportunities and recommendations to mould into an action plan. The Student Sport Working Group will then work on delivering this plan with the aim of achieving a Bronze Award within the next year.  With the continuation of engagement  in the HBHM Awards, Regional Ladders, SSS Leadership Programme and  SSS Regional Forums, City of Glasgow will definitely be on track to excel through the College Sport Award.

We look forward to working with City of Glasgow College on their journey – watch this space for progress!
