Scottish Students Win Big at Home Nations

April saw a surge in Scottish Student National Squad activity, with nearly half of our 24 squads taking part in competitions against our Home Nations counterparts throughout the last three weeks.

The action kicked off on Thursday 11th April with the Home Nations Netball 2019 tournament, hosted by English Universities Sport at the University of Hertfordshire. England proved unstoppable, winning the first match against Scotland 56-10. The Scottish squad were able to bounce back well for their second match of the tournament against the Welsh. However, they fell just short of completing the ever-desired comeback, in the end, falling 30-32 to their opposition.

Here at home in Scotland on Friday the 12th, the women’s and men’s Volleyball contingent took on other Scottish national teams at the 6th Annual International Student Challenge, hosted at the University of Edinburgh. The women’s team lost all sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) against a more experienced senior team, anchored by some internationals, while the men’s team pushed their opposition all the way, narrowing losing 3 sets to 1 (22-25, 25-13, 23-25, 23-25).

Luck started to turn during the weekend for Scotland at the Celtic Nations Aquatics competition which saw success for our Swimming squad. The team gladded to a comfortable win against Wales and Ireland, finishing with a commanding 40+ point victory. In addition, women’s waterpolo won sizably, beating the hosts Wales, by a final score of 37-4. Our men’s waterpolo battled, but unfortunately fell to the Welsh, 9 – 15 to close out the weekend.Shortly following the conclusion of the Celtic Nations, we saw the start of both the Home Nations Football and Hockey tournaments in Cardiff and Glasgow respectively.

England were a powerhouse in Men’s Hockey, winning both of their matches comfortably against Wales (5-2) and Scotland (6-3). Men’s Football saw some close contests with both Scotland versus Wales and Wales versus England ending in a draw. Wales came out on top after defeating Scotland 5 – 4 on penalties to break the tie.

After winning a tight match against Wales on penalties, Scottish Women’s player of the tournament, Kristina Kim (University of Edinburgh) scored the one and only goal in their match against England, sealing the Home Nations Football 2019 crown for the Scottish Women on Day 2 of the tournament. Echoing the success of their Football counterparts, the Scottish women’s Hockey squad were able to successfully bounce back from their defeat to Wales in penalty flicks to beat England 1-0 in regulation, placing them on top of the leader board on the last day of the 2019 Home Nations Hockey Tournament.

Stay Tune to the SSS Social Media channels for more National Squad updates as Basketball, Men’s Cricket and Men’s Lacrosse national squads will compete in their respective over the next two weeks and beyond.
