SSS Webinar Celebrates Volunteering

Novembers BiteSSSize Best Practice webinar focussed on the impact and value of volunteering with key insight from University of Glasgows Jamie Taylor and former Sports President Caitlin Kelly. Watch the webinar back in full here!

Our latest webinar in the BiteSSSize Best Practice series was Chaired by SSS’ very own Jess Barrows, and covered the experiences of panellists as volunteers but also the processes of recruiting and the value in developing volunteers. Both our panelists Jamie Taylor (University of Glasgow) and Caitlin Kelly (UEFA) began their careers in sport through volunteering and now work in roles where they are responsible for managing people.

Caitlins experience spans from her student sports club to some of the biggest sports events in the world where she now recruits for UEFA Euro 2020. Jamie began with Badminton Scotland and gave the advice of ‘be the volunteer an organisation didn’t know they needed’.

Discussions ranged from the initial process of getting volunteers on board, getting the training and development right, and ensuring appropriate reward and recognition. The impact of getting this right in student sport is rewarded with a more sustainable transition of committee members and delivery of events.

Members from across the SSS Tribe engaged in the webinar and contributed valuable questions to keep the discussions going.

SSS values the contribution of volunteers enormously and is currently accepting nominations for Volunteer of the Semester.
