Six boats, twelve teams and a brand new format. This year’s SSS Yachting Championships brought a record number of teams to Port Edgar for a weekend of close, sprint style racing. Teams were split into two fleets for a qualifying series on the Saturday. The top three teams from each fleet of the qualifiers then went into the Gold Fleet for the final day of racing with the remaining three from each in the Silver Fleet. Sunday brought sunshine, moderate breeze and flat water as the teams battled it out on high-intensity short courses between the old Forth bridges with the new Forth crossing adding to the impressive backdrop. Competition was close in both fleets meaning no team took a clear lead. The tight racing brought many protests and the final championships title came down to a hearing.
Congratulations to Edinburgh for winning the title and a special mention of the University of Highlands and Islands for travelling from Oban and providing the majority of helpers when they weren’t sailing.
SSS would like to say a huge thanks to Pete Wright for bringing his expertise as race officer, to all of the protest committee for staying late on Sunday night and to Port Edgar Watersports for providing boats and venue.
