After a hiatus due to Covid-19, the Scottish Student Triathlon Championships returned as part of the East Fife Triathlon Club’s Annual Triathlon, held at Cupar Sports Centre on Sunday 10th April.

It’s worth noting that this was the highest number of student participants recorded since the event started being run as part of the EFT Annual Triathlon in 2017! In addition to the clubs, teams from the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, St Andrews, Stirling, Strathclyde and Aberdeen as well as Robert Gordon University were in attendance. This is a massive achievement for the only Scottish Student Triathlon event able to run all year!

The event had an excellent atmosphere due to all the supporters and family members who came to spectate. Many crowded the barriers around the transition area offering encouragement to the athletes as they rushed to mount their bikes and set off down the track. As the cyclists trickled away from the venue and out into the rural hills of Cupar, they were all smiles. Whilst the latter half of the competitors were setting off, the first groups started to appear back at transition.

After the cycling came the running, as the athletes quickly dropped their bikes and were directed out to the track behind the sports centre. The first stretch of the run went through a scenic, wooded path, before coming out at the sports field. Competitors then had to make several laps before coming around the corner to the finish line. This was set out in front of the stands so all the supporters could cheer on the athletes rounding the final bend.

Shortly after the final competitor crossed the finish line all participants gathered in the club house for the medal ceremony.

In the men’s student category the winner was Rory Strachan of the University of Stirling with 1:05:46, followed by Thomas Dalgarno of Stirling (1:06:30) and Angus Toms of the University of Edinburgh (1:06:57). In the women’s student category, the winner was Hollie Hindley of the University of Edinburgh with 1:16:26, followed by Miriam Gilbride of the University of Glasgow (1:17:57) and Emme Thomas of Edinburgh (1:20:32). In the men’s team category, the winners were the University of Stirling with a combined time of 3:27:19, followed closely by the University of Edinburgh (3:27:35) and the University of Glasgow (3:46:01). In the women’s team category, the winners were the University of Edinburgh with 4:02:46, followed by the University of St Andrews (4:17:17) and the University of Glasgow (4:21:37).

Many thanks to East Fife Triathlon Club and the volunteers from Scottish Student Triathlon Chair for organising the event.

Conditions were almost perfect in Cupar as the Scottish Student Triathlon Sprint Championships kicked off.

This year the student numbers had more than doubled ensuring that it was going to be a competitive day. The race set up was a 750 meter swim, followed by a hilly 24km cycle and then a 5km run to finish.

First it was the swim – 30 x25m lengths – and first out the water was Kristof Anheuer (pictured) of University of St Andrews with a group of ten or so other athletes close behind, within that pack were Phoebe Lloyd-Evans and Aoife Fay (University of Stirling) the leading female students. Next it was out onto the bike a 24km undulating route with a long uphill struggle in the first few kilometres. Paul Kerr, University of Edinburgh, appeared first into transition on the back of the fastest split of the day closely followed by Luca Fanottoli (University of Stirling) and Nicholas Allan (University of Edinburgh).

For the females it was Aoife Fay who was first back in from the cycle. Continuing strongly into the run Aoife looked unbeatable as she took first place for the female students with Phoebe Lloyd-Evans second and Eilidh Thompson (University of Edinburgh) rounded out the top three.

In the male category after what can only be described as a sensational run Italian Luca Fanottoli (University of Stirling) managed to take back a handful of places to finish first. Second in was Nicholas Allan from the University of Edinburgh with Kristof Anheuer taking third spot for the University of St Andrews.
