Swimming Championships Make A Splash!

On Saturday 25th November, Scottish Students from the east and central belt descended upon the Mercat Gait Centre in Prestonpans for the return of the annual SSS Swimming Championships.

The meet saw a number of tight races over the course of the day. Angus Waugh (University of St Andrews) had a clean sweep in the Men’s Freestyle events, after narrowly beating his teammate Felix Meijer in the 100m by 0.7s & the 50m by 0.1s.

The University of Dundee women dominated the sprint backstroke events with a mere 0.3s separating them in both races; Cara Smith won the 100m whilst settling for silver behind Merryn Thomson in the 50m.

The closest race proved to be the Men’s 100m Individual Medley. Only 0.7s separated the top three Tim Ridgely (University of Dundee) took gold in 1.04.13, followed by Ben Read (University of St Andrews) & Robbie Anderson (University of Edinburgh).

The new mixed relays events were an exciting new addition. University of Dundee A team taking the Medley gold and a new meet record in 2.04.18, 0.1s ahead of their teammates University of Dundee B. Whilst University of St Andrews won the Mixed Freestyle Relay in a new meet record of 1.52.35.

Overall, University of St Andrews proved victorious by winning the Top Club Award! Full results can be found HERE.
